How to Make a Partnership/LLC Contribution
The NEFI Greener Heating Fuels PAC may accept contributions from partnerships (or LLCs that are treated as partnerships for tax purposes), even if they only have one natural person member. Federal law requires such contributions to count against each participating partner’s $5,000 annual limit. The partnership is also subjected to an overall $5,000 annual limit.
Here are step-by-step instructions:
- Confirm with a legal or tax professional that your partnership or LLC qualifies to contribute to the NEFI Greener Heating Fuels PAC.
- Determine the amount of the contribution not to exceed $5,000. Federal law requires the total contribution amount be explicitly apportioned to each contributing partner. If all partners participate in the contribution, the amount allocated may be in direct proportion to each contributing partner’s owning share of the business (i.e., if the donation is $4,000 and there are four partners with 25% share each, then each may contribute $1,000).
- The donation must be made by check to the “NEFI Greener Heating Fuels PAC.” We do accept partnership or LLC contributions by credit card.
- The check must be accompanied by a letter disclosing what portion of the total contribution has been allocated to each partner (per step 2 above). Click here to download a template contribution letter.
Mail the letter and contribution check to:

As with standard individual contributions to the PAC, contributions from partnerships and qualifying LLCs are completely voluntary. You may refuse to contribute without fear of reprisal. NEFI does not favor or disadvantage any member by reason of the amount of their contribution or the decision not to contribute. Partnerships and LLCs may not allocate any portion of a contribution to a partner or member who is a foreign national. Similarly, federal law prohibits foreign nationals from participating directly or indirectly in the partnership or LLC’s decision to contribute. Contributions from corporate partners are prohibited (i.e., all contributing partners must be natural persons). A partnership or LLC which is negotiating a contract with the federal government or which has not completed performance of such a contract is prohibited from making a contribution. Full guidance from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on partnership and LLC contributions can be found online here. For more information contact us.
